This jar was built by the coil and paddle method, a traditional Karatsu technique for making larger ware, such as tea storage jars and water jars. The impressions from the paddle and anvil are evident on the outside and inside of the piece. The front shows nice orange flashing from the fire and the alkali in the shells it was fired on.

Fired near the front of my anagama for about 60 hours. The ash glaze has run toward the front, which was face down during the firing. Ash glaze composed of wood ash and crushed, floated sandstone fines.

The clay body is from a seam of white clay in my town, originally discovered 60 years ago by Nakazato Muan, then lost for decades. I discovered it again last year due to a construction project in the area which clear cut the mountain.

Signed kiribako (Paulownia wood box), with cloth, cord, and hoshi (thick paper to protect the box's lid) included. I order kiribako sized to fit each piece as they are purchased. I then sign and stamp the box, and prepare the cord, cloth, and paper for each piece of work individually.
